Walking...fast...in the ccccoooold!!

This morning we headed out to the Ann Hamilton "the event of a thread" installation at the Park Avenue Armory.  We haven't totally figured it all out yet but it was very cool.  The armory was strung with giant swings and the swings were attached to levers that made a big white curtain rise and fall as the swings moved.  The billowing curtain was very cool and there were lots of opportunities for great photos!

Below is a picture I mistakenly overexposed or something...I don't even know what I did..but it turned out pretty cool when I fiddled with it in iPhoto on my computer.  You can see a few of the people who have on brightly colored clothing.

After the Armory, we walked to a diner for lunch and then to see the tree at Rockefeller Center.  It was beautiful and there were lots of people there taking pictures.

We have generous friends who gave us a gift certificate to 11 Madison Park where we had dinner tonight.  It was quite the event!  We were so stuffed afterwards that we walked back to the hotel...from 23rd Street to 61st! Almost two miles!  It felt good though to walk but by the end, my face was frozen.  It was below freezing and the wind was blowing a little.

I took a few pictures on the way to the hotel.  Below is the library with the lions guarding the entrance.

Here is a sliver of Grand Central Station with the Chrysler Building in the background.

And again, another picture of Rockefeller Center and the tree.

New Year's Day

Happy New Year!

Below are some photos of our walk home New Year's Eve.  We had dinner at Sfoglia, Lexington and 92nd Street and then walked back to the hotel, 30 blocks.

Below is the Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue and the winter windows.

On New Year's Day we went to MoMA to see a couple of installations we had read about.  And then we went to a terribly depressing French film.  Dinner was good at a new restaurant for us, Il Mulino Uptown.

Below is the facade of Rizzoli Bookstore, a frequent stop for us after church in the mid-80's.

Another photo of the residential tower going up on W 57th Street.

We stood in line for about 20 minutes to see The Clock, a 24 film of movie clips all concerning time and actually showing the time on clocks and watches.  We loved it and would have stayed for more of it but we were keeping abreast of the time on The Clock so we would know when to leave to see the movie we had purchased tickets for!  Below is one website's description of The Clock and this is a link to a short clip from the piece.

The Clock is a spectacular and hypnotic 24-hour work of video art by renowned artist Christian Marclay. Marclay has brought together thousands of clips from the entire history of cinema, from silent films to the present, each featuring an exact time on a clock, on a watch, or in dialogue. The resulting collage tells the accurate time at any given moment, making it both a work of art and literally a working timepiece: a cinematic memento mori.
Marclay also composed the soundscape, driven by a racing and swelling symphony of ringing, ticking, footsteps, laughter, tears, and music.

Happy New Year 2013!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Today we went to the Met and saw the Matisse and George Bellows exhibits.  Tony was not feeling very well so after lunch he headed back to the hotel.  I went to Bloomingdales and then got a message to pick up some medicine for him.  Hopefully, that will help him to feel better.

All over the city the street vendors had new year hats and noise makers.

And I love the holiday lights that are just about on every building!

I couldn't get my camera out of my pocket fast enough to get a good picture of this little dog with her sweater with the fur collar.  And I don't mean a dog collar...I mean her sweater had a fur collar!!

This is the front of Barney's.  They always have great window decorations.  These were set to music.  The lights would run up the building as the music swelled.

Another picture of one of the Barney's windows.  They changed as the music changed.

We had dinner at Sfoglia and then headed back toward the hotel for the fireworks in Central Park.

The tallest building below is the one going up on W 57th Street that had the dangling crane in Hurricane Sandy.  When finished, it will be the tallest residential building in the city.

Happy New Year!  Hope 2013 is a happy one!
